Description

The 36 song movements compiled by Hermann Rieth, organizer of the Schwäbisch Haller Sackpfeifertage, span a period of 600 years.

From earlier times, sometimes only the melodies, sometimes only the lyrics of the songs have survived; the accompaniment was probably often improvised by instrumentalists. The titles in this collection contain arrangements by various composers. They are mostly set for several voices; some songs are even deliberately represented in several arrangements.

Historical wind instruments usually have only a small range and a limited chromatic scale. The song settings of this collection are selected or arranged in such a way that they can be played with such instruments without further editing. They can be played excellently on instruments like Hümmelchen or Gemshörnern, which are quiet instruments often used to accompany singers.

According to the tradition of minstrels, these songs can of course be accompanied by very different instruments: Stringed instruments, plucked instruments or percussion instruments such as dulcimer, bells, xylophone and others will produce interesting colorful versions of sound.

In addition to better-known songs such as Es kommt ein Schiff geladen or Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, the collection contains lesser-known ones such as the Epiphany Canon. Historical movements at There is no Rose from the 15th century alternate with songs in modern accompaniment: Hört, ihr Hirten from 2004. Besides compositions of important church musicians: Psallite by Michael Praetorius or In Dulci jubilo by Johann Walter, there are also traditional pieces like Laissez paistre vos bestes from Brittany.

The main keys in this songbook are F major, C major, D minor, and D dorian.
