How do I measure the stick?
The bagpipe stick, also known as the pipe stick, is an essential part of this traditional instrument. It serves as a holder for the individual playing or melody pipes (chanter) and the drone pipes (drones). The stick is tied into the bag (the actual air reservoir of the bagpipe) and ensures that the pipes are securely fastened and airtight. This allows the air to be directed through the pipes to produce the characteristic sounds of the bagpipes. There are different types of sticks, depending on the type of bagpipe and its cultural origin, which are specifically adapted to the requirements of the respective musical tradition.
How to measure the size of the chanter stem

- Use a tape measure or ruler to help you.
- Carefully remove the chanter from the stick. Take special care not to damage the reed.
- Place the measuring tape on the top edge of the stick. This is the part that is already bound in the bag and is not visible.
- Pull the measuring tape to the lower edge where you removed the chanter.
- In the example photo, the length is 12.5 cm.
How to measure the circumference of the chanter stem

- Take a tape measure to help you.
- Wrap the measuring tape once around the stick at the widest point.
- Read the information in centimeters.
- In the example photo, the circumference is 12 cm.
To measure the distance between the top edge and your index finger

- Use a ruler or measuring tape to help you.
- Leave the whistle installed on the stick.
- Measure the distance from the upper edge of the stick to the first tone hole on the front of the chanter (where the index finger of the upper hand usually sits).
- In the example photo, the distance is 20 cm.
