The standard yellow winding yarn for Scottish pipes

  • Hemp yarn unwaxed, yellow
  • for all bagpipes with textile winding
  • for tunable connections

Description

Yellow Hemp is the standard wrapping thread for Great Highland Bagpipes, Smallpipes and Practice Chanter.

Proper connection between the individual parts of these instruments is effected by thread winding. This yellow yarn has been used for many years and belongs in every pipe case!

Yellow Unwaxed Bagpipe Hemp is an essential material that you should use regularly to maintain the functionality and sound of your bagpipe. The word comes from the English “to hemp” and refers to the process of hemping the bagpipe, respectively, the material used for this purpose. In the past, this was real hemp, but today bagpipers use fine twine to connect the chanter and drone pipes as airtight as possible.

Unwaxed or waxed Hemp

Most bagpipers use both the waxed“Black Waxed Bagpipe Hemp” and the unwaxed “Yellow Unwaxed Bagpipe Hemp”. Both complement each other, because while Waxed Hemp is very tight and allows little movement, Unwaxed Hemp absorbs moisture but allows the joints to move more easily. It is therefore particularly suitable for the tunable joints of the drones, as you can turn them slightly over the tuning pins when tuning and thus push them in or out. It also improves the sound, which Folk.World could confirm in a comparison with waxed hemp. Waxed Hem p, on the other hand, is used when you want the windings to be strong and moisture resistant (for example, the blowpipe, the tenons of the drone joints in the stocks and the chanter).

Bagpipe Hemp – how to wrap correctly

The connections of the pipes must be well wound, so that they are tight and airtight, but also movable. The best proven method for the Hemp to stay on the bagpipe as long as possible is parallel winding. Therefore, make sure that you put one thread next to the next at each round, and avoid crossovers.

The Yellow Unwaxed Bagpipe Hemp is used for the moving parts of the bagpipe, i.e. for the side of the drone joints where the drone top is placed.

In a first step, carefully remove the previous winding from the tuning pin of the Drone Joint, for example with a knife. Then pull a loop to attach the Hemp to the Tenon. This should sit at the end of the tenon so you can wrap one layer at a time from top to bottom and then back the other way around. You should always lay the thread parallel and without gaps. When you are done winding, you can slide the tuning pin with the Hemp wrapped around it into the Drone Top. To keep it from falling off, make sure the drone top is tight enough, but also make sure it’s loose enough that you can adjust it with two fingers.

Yellow Unwaxed Bagpipe Hemp

Yellow Unwaxed Bagpipe Hemp is suitable for all bagpipes with textile winding. This is because the thread winding is so important as a connection between the individual parts of the respective instruments. Bagpipes such as the Great Highland Bagpipe, the German Smallpipe or the Wee-Pipe consist of movable elements that must be connected air-tight to each other in order to sound properly. This particularly often affects the chanter and the drone. So the yellow yarn is an absolute classic and belongs in every pipe accessory!

A clear recommendation from Folk.World

To maintain the longevity of your instrument, you should service it regularly. An important part of this process is hemping or “hemping.” While many different materials are offered that can be used as Hemp, the Coats Barbour “Single Linen Shoe” is the most trusted Hemp. The linen yarn offered here can absorb humidity, but it optimally conducts the sound between the components. Yellow Unwaxed Bagpipe is the optimal solution for hemp wrapping in dry places.
