Description

Welcome to “Beat Position (Basic Course)” – the course that will give you the key to expressive bagpipe playing! Here everything revolves around Scottish bagpipes like the Great Highland Bagpipe, Scottish Smallpipe or Borderpipe. No previous knowledge required!

Your instructor Thomas Zöller will introduce you to the fascinating world of “Beat Position”. This concept is the key to expressive bagpipe playing and sustainably improves the phrasing of your tunes.

The course is divided into three exciting parts:

Part 1: Here you will learn the basics of the “Beat Position”, including single gracenotes and tachum. With an entertaining quiz you can test your knowledge.

Part 2: We go further and deal with doublings and slurs. These techniques give your game a special dynamic. Again, work materials and a quiz to reinforce your skills await you.

Part 3: Now we put everything we have learned into practice on a sample piece – “The Mermaid Song”. A beautiful piece to show off your newly acquired skills. Of course, this is also followed by a final quiz to check your progress.

In our basic course “Beat Position” you will learn:

  • The relationship between the “beat position” and the phrasing of a piece.
  • The “Beat Position” for common single gracenotes, strikes, doublings, slurs and the tachum.
  • Exercises to accurately incorporate “beat position” into your playing.
  • Examples of the implementation of the “beat position” using well-known Scottish bagpipe melodies.

With approximately 65 minutes of video footage and step-by-step quizzes, you can deepen your knowledge. You will also receive worksheets in PDF format.

The course is especially for players of Scottish bagpipes and those interested in Scottish ornamentation techniques.

Our goal is for you to better grasp the rhythmic subtleties of bagpipe playing and develop an awareness of how the placement of ornamentation affects the phrasing of a piece.
