Description
Since the beginning of the 1970s, the hurdy-gurdy has become fully established in the traditional folk music of many European countries, as well as in early music and jazz, and is now one of the standard instruments.
However, the musical fascination of this very complex instrument is countered, as is the case with the various designs of bagpipes, by the necessity for the musician to keep his instrument technically up to date. Maintenance and fine-tuning are therefore tasks that a hurdy-gurdy player must always perform on his instrument himself.
The authors have made it their task to impart this important knowledge. Philippe Destrem, France, and Volker Heidemann, Germany, are long-time experts in the field, both as instrument makers and as experienced course instructors and musicians.
All the work, adjustments and corrections described are clearly illustrated by approx. 120 sketches. A troubleshooting table, the extensive bibliography and an insert with addresses of the hurdy-gurdy scene in Germany make the work an indispensable helper.
