Collection of sheet music for the medieval (market) bagpipe and other instruments by Brian Haase and Thomas Zöller

Description

Following the Sackpfeifen-Fibel, the first and only textbook for the medieval bagpipe to date, a new collection of sheet music has now also been published, providing musicians with fresh repertoire and new ideas.

The idea for this collection of sheet music for the widely used instruments came from Brian Haase (FABULA) and Thomas Zöller (formerly Estampie), who teach together at the bagpipe academy in Hofheim, which was founded by Thomas. The often criticized lack of good and suitable sheet music gave both of them the idea of taking matters into their own hands and incorporating their own playing techniques and musical ideas.

In this music booklet, however, the two not only provide a collection of interesting melodies suitable for the bagpipes, but also background information on the pieces, references to the composers and regional classifications of the origin of the music. For almost a year, material was collected, pieces were arranged back and forth and contact was sought with colleagues who could provide additional advice on certain aspects of the repertoire.

The first volume of the collection now contains 50 melodies for the medieval (market) bagpipe. Most of them come from the traditional repertoire of Brittany, Ireland, Italy, the Balkans and Scotland. The booklet also contains songs from the Cantigas de Santa Maria and new compositions by the two authors and other musicians.

As with the Sackpfeifen-Fibel, the entire repertoire was recorded by Thomas Zöller and Brian Haase and can be accessed at any time from an online database.

The notation naturally uses the tried and tested ornamentation system for the medieval bagpipe, which is explained in detail in the Sackpfeife Primer and is easy to use. Other instruments, such as hurdy-gurdy or shawm, can simply omit the indicated ornaments or transfer them in a way that suits their instrument.

Texts and explanations in this collection are available in German and English. Further volumes are planned.

English:

As a sequel to “Sackpfeifen-Fibel”, the only available tutor for the mediaeval bagpipe, we now present a new collection of sheet music, which supplies musicians with new ideas and a fresh repertoire.

Brian Haase (FABULA) and Thomas Zöller (ex Estampie), both teachers at Thomas’s bagpipe academy, came up with the idea for a tune collection for these popular instruments. A much-criticized lack of suitable sheet music inspired them to take care of the problem themselves, making creative use of their individual playing techniques and their musical ideas.

However, this collection provides not only a compilation of interesting, playable tunes for the bagpipe, but also background information on the pieces, on the composers, and on the regional origins of the music. It took the authors almost a year to collect their material, to arrange and re-arrange the pieces and to contact colleagues who could give additional advice on certain aspects of the repertoire.

The first volume of the collection contains 50 tunes for the mediaeval bagpipe, mainly taken from the traditional repertoire of Brittany, Ireland, Italy, the Balkans, and Scotland. Also included are songs from the Cantigas de Santa Maria as well as new compositions by the authors and other musicians.

As with the “Sackpfeifen-Fibel”, the whole repertoire was recorded by Thomas Zöller and Brian Haase and can be downloaded from an online database for listening and playing along.

Of course, the notation uses again the tried and tested ornamentation system for the mediaeval bagpipe which is easy to use and explained in detail in the “Sackpfeifen-Fibel”.

Musicians with other instruments, such as hurdy-gurdy or shawm, can easily omit the ornamentation provided or adapt it for their instrument.

Texts and explanations in this collection are given in German and English. Further volumes are under preparation.
