Description
Austrian dance music from historical sources: In this volume, Simon Wascher brings together Parts I and II of his collection “Melodies from Musicians’ Manuscripts up to ca. 1800.” The edition presents a repertoire preserved in manuscripts, complete with source citations and notes on notation.
Part I contains the complete transcription of a manuscript labeled “Göstling” and “Palfau” from the Austrian Folk Song Archive in Vienna. Wascher has expanded historical abbreviations in the musical notation to make them readable today. Where changes have been made to the notation, the original notation is shown first in a smaller font. Notes explain the additions and corrections that have been made. The preface also discusses the rhythmic characteristics of individual pieces and references to the violin as the original instrument.
Part II includes dance melodies from various sources:
- Manuscript by Bernhard Stüblinger, Viechtwang, 1764
- Folk Dances from the Steyr and Wels Regions, 1779
- “Dances from Upper Austria”
- Dance Tunes from Maria Taferl
- Dances from Zell and Windhag marked “1702”
This collection provides you with material for making music and exploring historical dance music. By consulting the source references and comparing the notations, you can trace the transmission of these pieces and explore the musical interpretation of the traditional melodies.
